The Kata Board is designed to motivate students to take responsibility for their own learning by encouraging them to strive to learn their first five Kata. Students experience success through an elaborate reward system that involves ataining three stars for each kata. The first star is given when the student is able to perform the kata with the physical assistance of the instructor. The second star is awarded when the student is able to demonstrate the kata with limited assistance from the instructor (eg. Only verbal ques). The third star is given when the student can perform the whole kata by themselves with no assistance and good technique.

The kata board is divided into three achievment levels, they are:-

Bronze:- To achieve their bronze certificate students must atain three stars for both Heian Shodan and Heian Nidan (the first two kata).

Silver:- Students will receive their silver certificate when they are able to perform Heian Shodan, Nidan, Sandan and Yondan with good strong technique and no assistance.

Gold:- The gold certificate is awarded when students demonstrate all five Heian Kata with good strong technique.
