Martial arts have been a major part of Luke's life since the moment he was born. Luke's father, Terry started training in Judo while at college studying to become a teacher. After University Terry returned to country Victoria eager to learn more, however there were little opportunities to learn martial arts in rural Victoria at this time. In 1973 Terry finally found a dojo and began training. After a number of years of very tough training he reached the rank of 1st Kyu, unfortunately before achieving his black belt the club closed down. Terry did not give up however and continued to search for another club to train with. He finally found him self at a JKA dojo where he started his training over again as a white belt. Eventually in 1982 Terry was awarded his black belt From Sensei Takahashi.

Luke and his Dad receive their 2nd Dan togetherLuke was first introduced to the Martial arts by his father at age 5 they trained together in their backyard. Then at age 7 Luke was encouraged to attend Tae Kwon do classes. However this didn't last long as he didn't take to formal training that well and instead preferred to continue his training in the backyard. It wasn't until Luke reached the age of 13 that he joined the same JKA club that his father had attended 10 years earlier. Luke took a shine to his new training environment and progressed quickly. Every spare minute was spent learning from books or watching martial arts videos. By the age of fifteen Luke was training 6 days a week and 4 -5 hours a day. Training consisted of running, weights, Karate, Boxing and swimming. The hours he and his dad spent training together in the shed soon encouraged Terry to recommence training back at his old dojo. Then in 1998 Luke and his dad both graded for their 2nd dan black belts together. Just as his father past down his teachings to him, Luke plans to continue the family tradition with his three daughters, Ellyse, Pyper and Maddyson.

Profile
NAME: Luke Michael Byrne

AGE: 25yo (20/5/78)

RANK: 3rd dan

MARITAL STATUS: Married to Shelley with three girls (Ellyse, Pyper & Maddyson)

FAVOURITE TECHNIQUES: All techniques have something to offer, I don't think that I have a favourite, if I do, it changes regularly depending on what I am training at the time. Although I do enjoy kicking techniques.

FAVOURITE FOOD: I'll try anything. Well.. maybe not anything

TRAINING ROUTINE: It depends on the time of year and if there are any major competitions or events coming up. The basis of my training is dojo training which I then supplement with a lot of cardio work and resistance training. I also enjoy grappling when I can as it builds muscular endurance. In order to fit all of my training in as well as work I must train 6 to 7 days a week, including two sessions on Friday and Saturday. A good test of my fitness is Sensei Keith's 12 hour non-stop Gasshuku, which I'm training for at the moment.

AMBITIONS: My main ambition has always been to reach my full potential. Whether I win or lose competitions is irrelevant, if I can look back at sixty and say I gave it my all, then I am happy. In terms of coaching I want to be able to provide my students with greater opportunities and knowledge so that they may also reach their goals and desires.

FAVOURITE PAST TIMES: Apart from martial arts and fitness, I enjoy simple things such as going for a walk or having a BBQ or watching a movie (all of which I like to do with my family).

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY: Keep an open mind and take the time to listen to people because everybody has something to teach!

WORDS OF ADVICE: Enjoy what you do, and never doubt yourself.
