This is the first Kata in the SKC syllabus and also the first of a series of five katas known as the Heian katas. This kata provides training in the fundamental techniques of forward stance, back stance, upper block, knife hand block, lower block and stepping punch. The kata contains 21 moves with Kiais on moves no 9 (third upper block), and 17 (third punch). The kata takes approximately 40 seconds to complete and should not be rushed.

Heian Shodan - Bunkai (application)
Each move in a kata has at least one if not several practical applications (we have chosen just a few of the techniques to demonstrate). Within karate we must not only train the pattern of the kata but also the application or Bunkai as it is termed. It is important first of all to learn the traditional Bunkai before learning variations of the same move. The Bunkai of Heian Shodan shows us how we can use blocking techniques as strikes, using the opposite hand to pull the opponent into the attack.

Bunkai - Move 4
This move shows us an easy yet effective wrist escape. By rotating wrist against your opponents thumb, and pulling down and away from your opponent it is quite easy to escape. By continuing this momentum you can bring your arm around in a large ark and strike your attacker either on the colar bone, bridge of the nose or top of the head.

Bunkai -Moves 8 & 9
After blocking your opponents attack, grab their arm rotating their elbow downwards. Then as you pull the arm down strike up with your opposite forearm breaking their elbow.
Bunkai - Moves 20 & 21
After blocking their attack, grab their arm as you step forward and strike with a knife hand attack to the side of the neck. Again remember to use your opposite hand to pull them into the attack.
