This is the third Kata in the Heian series and introduces the use of a new stance, namely Kiba Dachi (horse riding stance). It also continues the theme of simultaneous blocking and attacking techniques and demonstrates how to defend against an attack from behind. Heian Sandan also uses unconventional footwork and blocks, blocking with the elbows and other body parts, which may be of assistance when the hands are unavailable (eg. tied up), and introduces the stomping attack. The kata has only 20 moves with Kiai's occuring on moves 10 & 20. It should take approximately 40 seconds to complete.

Heian Sandan - Bunkai (application)
Each move in a kata has at least one if not several practical applications (we have chosen just a few of the techniques to demonstrate). Heian Sandan introduces another wrist escape and also shows us stomping and throwing techniques.
