This is the second kata of the Heian group. This kata provides further training in the basic stances of forward stance and backstance but unlike the first of the Heian Katas Heian Nidan introduces combination techniques, simultaneous use of blocking and attacking techniques as well as kicking. There are twenty six moves in this kata with the Kiais occurring on moves no. 11 and 26. The kata should take approximately 50 seconds to complete.

Heian Nidan - Bunkai (application)
Each move in a kata has at least one if not several practical applications (we have chosen just a few of the techniques to demonstrate). Heian Nidan shows us how to use blocking and attacking moves simultaneously. Also it continues the theme of using blocks as attacks and using the opposite arm to pull the offender into the attack.

Bunkai - Moves 4 - 6
Block the opponents first attack with a high forearm block, then with the same arm block his second punch as you trap his arm with your other forearm. Clamp your arms together applying pressure on his elbow, then slide your hand down his arm to grab his wrist. From there pull him towards you as you deliver a hammer fist strike to his jaw.

Bunkai - Moves 7 & 8
As your opponent strikes block his punch with your arm as you deliver a side kick to either his chin or abdomen. Then as you step back into backstance deliver an elbow strike to his solar plexus.

Bunkai - Moves 10 & 11
As the offender attacks apply a pressing block with your front hand, then strike over the top with a knife hand strike to a soft target such as the throat, eyes or solar plexus. This block is most effective when moving into the opponent.
